Over thirty years in financial planning, spent mostly disagreeing — politely, and in writing — with the people who regulate it.

Paul has worked in financial planning for more than three decades, across the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors, and has spent much of that time thinking about the gap between what regulation demands and what actually helps a client. He is a Principal at Moran Partners Financial Planning, a boutique independent financial planning practice based in Melbourne, and CEO of iFactFind.

He has lectured in financial planning for more than two decade, has travelled widely to see how financial planning is practiced in other jurisdictions, and completed a Doctor of Business Administration at Victoria University in 2020, researching why sensible people make the irrational investment choices they do, and what that means for how advice should be given.

His essays argue, consistently, for one thing: that professional judgment — built on genuine qualification, experience and a fiduciary duty to the client — is a better guarantee of good advice than another layer of prescriptive rules.
